The great machine of solidarity

The Banco delle Opere di Carità is a non-profit Foundation established in Caserta in 1993. Its task is to run the great machine of solidarity: working with food companies, recovering their products and distributing them through its 16 branches across Italy.

Local charities, parishes, associations, social cooperatives and public bodies, collect supplies at the Banco's branches and so reach the people they assist. The Banco does not hand food directly to individuals: it supports those who already do.

The Banco's work gives practical help to people in difficulty and reduces food waste, saving food that within a few months would have been thrown away.

01

Recover

The Banco works with food manufacturers, supermarket chains and producers and collects the surplus that cannot be sold.

02

Restore

In the branch warehouses the products are checked, sorted and prepared, in line with the hygiene standards required for distribution.

03

Give

The food is handed over free of charge to the partner organisations, which bring it to the families and individuals they support on an ongoing basis.

A network of branches across Italy

The Banco has 16 branches in 9 regions, from Campania to Piedmont, from Veneto to Sicily. Each branch has a warehouse, 24,611 square metres in all, where the local partner organisations collect their supplies and from which the food reaches the people they assist.

The head office is in Caserta, at Viale E. Mattei 14, where the Foundation was established in 1993.

The values that guide the Banco's work

Four principles apply throughout the network, in every branch and in every relationship with the companies that give and the organisations that receive.

Free of charge

The Banco asks nothing of the companies that donate or of the organisations that receive. The food is handed over free of charge and the organisations undertake to distribute it free of charge.

Subsidiarity

The Banco does not replace those who work locally: it supports the parishes, associations, cooperatives and public bodies that already assist people, and multiplies what they can do.

Dignity

Every person who receives help through the Banco's network is treated with respect, without distinction of any kind.

Transparency

Every year the Foundation reports publicly on its work: kilos distributed, people helped, partner organisations, staff and finances.

A Third Sector foundation

The Banco delle Opere di Carità is a non-profit body listed in Italy's National Register of Third Sector Entities. It reports on its work in an annual report, and those who support it are entitled to the tax relief provided by law.
