Becoming a volunteer at the Banco

The Banco delle Opere di Carità recovers food and hands it over to the organisations that support people in need. In our branches, in the warehouses and on food-collection days, most of the work is done by volunteers. Anyone with a few hours to give can apply on this page.

What volunteers do

The work varies from branch to branch and depends on each person's availability. These are the main activities: at the first meeting we agree together where you fit best.

01
Food drives
At the shops

On food-drive days, volunteers receive what shoppers donate at the supermarket entrance, pack it into boxes and send it on to the warehouses. The 2026 Food Drive collected 1,547,891 kg.

02
Distribution to families
At the distribution centres

Packing food parcels and handing them to families in difficulty, either in the Banco's warehouses or at our partner organisations.

03
Collection and logistics
Out on the road

Collecting unsold food from supermarkets, food manufacturers and markets, and transporting it to the warehouses: nothing still good goes to waste.

04
Warehouse work
In the warehouses

Receiving, recording and storing the food, with attention to traceability, expiry dates and proper storage. The Banco runs 24,611 m² of warehouse space.

05
Working with partner organisations
In the office

Supporting staff in their dealings with partner organisations: collection schedules, communications, paperwork. In 2025 the partner organisations numbered 1,954.

06
Raising awareness
Events and communication

Taking part in events, fairs and local initiatives to make the Banco's work known and to bring in new donors and supporters.

Why do it

Without volunteers the Banco could not function: most of the work in the warehouses, on food-drive days and with partner organisations is in their hands. Their commitment is what allows thousands of people to have access to food every day.

Volunteering is not only about giving: it is an experience that returns skills, relationships and a concrete measure of what has been achieved.

A concrete result

The hours you give become food delivered: in 2025 the Banco distributed 25,035,272 kg of food to 586,460 people assisted.

A community

You join a network of people who share the same values, in the branches and warehouses across the whole Banco network.

Skills

Organisation, logistics, dealing with partner organisations and with the people assisted: abilities that stay with you and can be documented.

A commitment that fits you

Each person chooses when and how much to give, around their own life. Even a few hours a month are useful.

How to start, in three steps

No previous experience is required. The process is the same in every branch: an application, an informal meeting, a period alongside an experienced volunteer.

01

Send your application

Fill in the form at the bottom of the page or write to us on WhatsApp. Just tell us who you are, where you live and how much time you can give.

02

An informal meeting

A contact person from the nearest branch gets back to you for an informal conversation: the work, the shifts, the ways to take part.

03

Working alongside

You start alongside an experienced volunteer, in the activities that best suit your availability.

No special requirements

The Banco welcomes volunteers of every age and background. All that is needed is a few hours of availability and the willingness to work with others.

Are you between 18 and 28?

The Banco also takes part in the Universal Civil Service: a full-time year in the branches of the network.
